Line and shape

Pattern, rhythm and symmetry

Repeat a shape and you get a pattern. Vary the spacing and rhythm comes in. Mirror it and you get symmetry. That is how you create calm, or tension instead.

Why

Why does a butterfly look so balanced, and why does your eye keep getting caught on wallpaper?

A butterfly is almost the same on both sides: symmetrical. Wallpaper repeats the same motif over and over: a pattern.

Repetition and mirroring make a picture calm and orderly. If you know the rules, you can also break them on purpose to make something stand out.
