Looking at art
Figurative, stylised and abstract
A figurative work shows something you can recognise. Abstract work lets go of that and speaks with line, shape and colour. In between lies a sliding scale.
Why
Is a painting with nothing but straight lines and three colours still art, if you can't recognise anything in it?
Not every artwork wants to show something you know. Some works speak only with lines, flat areas and colours, like music without words.
If you know how an artist moves from recognisable to abstract, you look at such works differently. And you can try it yourself.
