Colour and light

Light and shadow: tonal values

A value scale runs from white to black. With highlight, mid-tone, core shadow, reflected light and cast shadow, you draw how light falls on a shape.

First stage of secondary school12 to 14 yearsDraft: Not yet checked by an art teacher.

Why

How can you still tell on a black-and-white photo whether something is round or flat, and where the sun was?

Light never falls equally strongly everywhere. Where the light hits a shape, it becomes light; on the other side, it becomes dark.

Those light and dark tones show the shape, the direction of the light and even the time of day.
