Colour and light

Complementary colours and contrast

Colours opposite each other on the colour wheel make each other brighter side by side and duller when you mix them. That is how you create contrast.

First stage of secondary school11 to 14 yearsDraft: Not yet checked by an art teacher.

Why

Why does a red tomato look even redder on a green leaf, and why does your paint turn brown when you mix red and green?

Some colours strengthen each other. They sit directly opposite each other on the colour wheel.

Once you know that, you can make something stand out, or calm down a colour that is too bright.
